Microphone Setup Checklist

✔ Check Headset and Microphone Setup

  • Ensure the headset or external microphone is plugged in fully and securely.
    • If using a USB headset, connect it directly to the device (not through a hub).

    • For wired headsets, listen for a click when inserting the audio jack to confirm it’s fully connected.

    • Position the microphone close to the student’s mouth, about 1–2 inches away—not below the chin or off to the side.

    • Avoid placing the mic directly in front of the nose or mouth to prevent muffled or distorted audio.

Check for a Mute Switch or Button

  • Some headsets have built-in mute functions, which can sometimes be triggered by accident.
    • Look for a physical mute button on the headset or cord.

    • Be aware of discreet muting features, such as lifting the microphone arm too high, which can prevent the device from picking up sound.

    • Make sure the headset is fully unmuted before recording.

Test the Device Microphone

  • If audio is still quiet or missing:
    • Unplug the headset and try using the device’s built-in microphone.
    • If the built-in mic works, there may be an issue with the headset.

Confirm Microphone Permissions

  • If no audio is being captured, the browser or device may not have permission to access the microphone.

  • A disabled microphone can also cause the application to not respond when students click the record button. If this happens, it’s likely that the microphone was accidentally disabled.

    • Look for the small microphone icon in the browser’s address bar. If the browser is blocking microphone access, select “Allow” and refresh the page.

    • If you still can’t record, follow the steps in this article to check and enable microphone access:  How to Enable Your Microphone

Note: Make sure you’re using the latest version of Chrome, Edge, or Safari. Outdated browsers can sometimes prevent the microphone from working correctly.

Check Your Microphone Input

  • If audio is still quiet or missing, you may want to check the microphone input:

    • For iOS:
      • Open Settings > Privacy > Microphone.

      • Make sure the app you’re using has microphone access enabled.

    • For Chromebooks:
      • Click the time in the bottom-right corner and select the Audio Settings.

      • Ensure that the input volume is appropriate (not too high or too low).

      • Make sure the correct microphone is selected and that the site/app has permission to use it.

Extra Tips

  • Clear your browser cache and restart. Sometimes cached data prevents microphone access or recordings from working properly.

  • Encourage students to speak at a normal volume — shouting or whispering can both cause issues.

  • Avoid touching or adjusting the headset or cord during recording, as movement can cause crackling or interruptions

  • If possible, use a high-quality headset designed for recording or calls.

  • Restart the device if problems persist after checking all steps.
